Description

Dimensions - Length 90mm.
SINGLE-LOOPED. SUB-RECTANGULAR AT MOUTH WITH SUB-RECTANGULAR BODY WIDENING TO CRESCENTIC CUTTING EDGE OF 45MM. MOULDING HEAVY AT MOUTH, LIGHTER BELOW. CASTING SEAMS IMPERFECTLY TRIMMED (B2).
A single-looped bronze socketed axe was dug up in the 1930s by the late Thomas Barnard on the SW side of Park Street, Princes Risborough, on the site now occupied by a bungalow named "Le Chatelet' SP 806029. He also dug up a similar axe on the same site a year earlier. The earlier-found implement is noted by Head (b4) in his gazetteer (but Head gives the site as that of "the British Legion HQ on the SW side of Park Street" and his authority as the late Mr H Peake). ILLUSTRATION (B3).
DUG UP BY MR T BARNARD, BUILDER (B1).

Mr Barnard's widow owns 'Le Chatelet' but she has no knowledge of these finds or their wherabouts. The property is centred at SP 80630330. It appears certain that at least one axe was found here, but the confused siting of the possible second was not resolved. The British Legion property is centred at SP 80720322 (B6).
