A medieval moat is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Part of more extensive medieval settlement earthworks in Chetwode village, the moat is located in the grounds of The Hermitage and centred at SP 63925 29551, a roughly U-shaped ditch between 5 and 11.5 metres wide and with the NNW facing side open, a 26 metres long ditch is aligned NNW-SSE, 46 metres WSW-ENE and 40 metres SSE-NNW. This is recorded as a water-filled pond on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyor’s Drawing and on aerial photographs taken in 2019 still appears to be water-bearing (3-8).
