Description
LARGE CINERARY URN DISCOVERED CONTAINING CHIEFLY CALCINED HUMAN BONES. SMALLER URN CONTAINED WHITISH POWDER CONSISTING OF CHALK, FLINTS, WOOD, CHARCOAL, SPICULAE OF BONE & LIME CARBONATE (B1).
WIDESPREAD BRONZE AGE PRACTICE OF BURYING CREMATIONS IN URNS WITH MOUTH DOWNWARDS (B5).
Two inverted urns, the larger containing an incense
cup, were found in December 1888 in a field called 'Barrow Croft'
adjoining Barrow Croft Wood (area SU 885914). There was no
knowledge of a mound here apart from the field name.
The urns have been presented to the British Museum. (B10)
Illustration of urns (B11)
SU 885914. Two inverted Middle Bronze Age urns and a pigmy cup found in Barrow Croft Field. Listed as a round barrow.
A barbed and tanged arrow-head was dug up in Barrow Croft Field, and though no evidence is available to associate it with the cremation and urns already found there, it is not improbable that it originally accompanied the burial. (B12)
The field name "Barrow Croft" is not known locally and the Tithe Map is unavailable. However it almost certainly refers to the pasture field centred at SU 884913 which occupies a prominent spur between dry valleys, and it the only logical situation for a barrow on burial. No trace and no finds made recently (B13).
