Description

Plan Form - CIRCULAR
DR WILLIS MENTIONS CELTIC OR BRITISH FORTIFICATION, MAWTRIM'S OR MAMUCK'S WELL, LATER MALMER'S WELL (B1).
AT SU8688 9364 ON PARKER'S MAP BUT THIS DOES NOT AGREE WITH WILLIS'S DIMENSIONS (B6).
OS MARKS 'CAMP (SUPPOSED SITE OF)' AT NGR (B2).
POSS 2 EARTHWORKS (B4).
NO VISIBLE REMAINS CEMETERY LANDSCAPING (B5).

(SU 86889364) Supposed Site of (NAT) Camp (NR) (B7).

"Above the church, (High Wycombe) about two furlongs distant, is a Celtic or British fortification, called Mawtrim's or Mamuck's Well, afterwards called Malmer's Well, about three hundred yards from the Castle Hill, (SU 89 SE 15) lying on the north side; it is round with entrances on the north and south sides, and is bounded on the east and partly on the north, by the ancient British road, called Crendon Lane."

Presumably the "supposed site of Camp" shown on Parker's map at SU 86889364. However this does not agree with Willis's dimensions which would bring it within the area of the present cemetery - SU 868935 (B1 and B9).

Area indicated falls with High Wycombe cemetery: No further information except that the Iron Age storage pit (SU 89 SE 9) could have been part of this work. (B8)
