Plan Form - RECTILINEAR
VAGUE LINEAR FEATURES, BOUNDARIES ETC VISIBLE AS CROPMARKS ON AERIAL PHOTOS (B1).
FEATURES SKETCH PLOTTED AT 1 :2,500 (POOR CONTROL POINTS ON AERIAL PHOTOS)(B2).
A desk-based assessment was carried out of 39.16 acres of Langley Airfield. It revealed cropmarks identified as field boundaries and a double ditched trackways in the NE and NW. The research highlighted the large number of Palaeolithic stone implements found during quarrying in the 1890s along the northern boundary (near Purser's Pit CAS 0234). During topsoil stripping in the 1930s, small circular areas filled with charcoal together with pottery sherds were noted by workmen. Similar features were noted again in 1936. It also seems likely that traces of medieval trackways and field systems connected with the manor house at Richings Lodge encroach on the southern and eastern part of the development area. Strip fields are shown as surviving on the enclosure map of 1794 (BRO, REF:IR/35C.R) (B3).
The main group of findings comprise an apparent system of ditched enclosures . The enclosures do not align with the cultivation strips as shown on the 1736 map. The main ditch is aligned SW-NE. Possibly represents settlement remains. There is also a possible pit like feature towards the north of the survey area. Linear anomalies can be seen from the SW field boundary, these align with boundaries shown on the 1801 map [also align with field divisions seen on the 1940 aerial photo] (B4).
