Description

21 OR MORE PITS EXPOSED IN TOPSOIL STRIPPING DURING CONSTRUCTION OF M40 MOTORWAY (M40 SITE 15). 2 EXCAVATED BY R A CHAMBERS (OXFORD UNIT) & REMAINDER WATCHED. PITS CONTAINED WOOD & CHARCOAL & 1 UNDATABLE BRONZE OBJECT. WOODLAND INDUSTRY? DATE & PURPOSE UNCERTAIN (B1-2). BRONZE & SOIL SAMPLES AT BCM.

(SU 742967) 15 [possibly refering to Site 15, not number of pits] U-shaped pits of unknown date or purpose, 1.0m by 1.5m, and 0.4 to 0.6m deep, containing a heavy layer of charcoal, were discovered when top soil was stripped off prior to the construction of the 'M40'. (B3)

The ground surface has now been completely destroyed.
A further report on the site is to be published in Dec 1972 by the M40. Arch Research Group. Sited to OS 6" only. (B4)
