NEARBY KILN [CASS 01527].

[SU 993877] A possible early Roman pottery kiln site lies a few hundred yards from the SSW corner of the Bulstrode Camp [SU 98 NE 2], on land attached to the house called 'Polkerris', Camp Road. It has not been investigated, and is only conjectural, but considerable quantities of coarse pottery fragments resembling the wares of
Hedgerley [SU 98 NE 1] and Fulmer [SU 98 NE 31] have been found (B5-B6).

The garden of 'Polkerris' is centred at SU 9925 8755. The present owner has no knowledge of these finds and has found nothing significant (B7).

At `Springwood', Hedgerley Lane (SU 9923 8750) a partial excavation of a type F6, large circular clay-lined kiln was carried out by C Stanley and B Stainton in 1979. There was geophysical evidence of a further kiln nearby. The products included grey local type narrow-mouthed jars, cavetto-rimmed cooking pots and bead-rimmed dishes. Date: Late (?) 2nd century (B8).

NRHE Update 1998 (B9).
