Type and Period (1)

  • MANOR HOUSE (17th Century to 19th Century - 1600 AD? to 1899 AD)

Description

ORIGINAL MANOR HOUSE BURNT DOWN & REBUILT 1635 (B2).
REBUILT BY DOYLEY FAMILY (B3).
THIS HOUSE TAKEN DOWN & REBUILT C1847 (B1,B4).
TURVILLE COURT IS A GREY RENDERED BRICK BUILDING, ARCHITECTURALLY UNDISTINGUISHED, THOUGH OBVIOUSLY 'DESIRABLE', STANDING IN EXTENSIVE, WELL-TENDED GARDENS. A HIGH FLINT WALL, DIVIDING THE FORMAL & VEGETABLE GARDENS, PROBABLY PRE-DATES THE HOUSE AS DO THE STABLES, WHICH ARE PROBABLY EARLY C19. NOTHING IN THE VICINITY SUGGESTS THAT THERE WAS ANYTHING EARLIER THAN C19 BUILDING HERE. THE FISHPOND MARKED ON OS 6-INCH MAP 130M E OF THE HOUSE IS A CONCRETE-LINED, PURELY MODERN, CONSTRUCTION (B5).
