A post medieval brickfield is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 225 metres E of Upper South Farm and centred at SP 73201 19230, an irregularly shaped pit covers an area about 8,626 square metres. Recorded on the 1st Edition OS map dated 1880 with 2 kilns, various buildings and several clay pits, by the 2nd Edition OS map dated 1899, the site is marked as ‘Brickworks (disused)’ and the kilns and buildings are no longer shown. On aerial photographs taken in 1947, the former brickworks is covered in secondary woodland, though water filled clay pits are visible. By 1952 the woodland growth has increased and expanded and by 1961 covers almost all the site. This woodland has been somewhat cleared back by 1975, which is how it remains on aerial photographs taken in 2023. The clay pit/brickfield could only be mapped from recent remote sensing data (9-16).
