Description

Plan Form - RECTANGULAR
PART OF A RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE (?) WITH INTERNAL FEATURES VISIBLE AS A CROPMARK ON AP'S (PROBABLY NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE MILL, 00:000)(B7).

A rectilinear ditched enclosure of probable Iron Age or Roman date is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 360 metres ESE of Gawcott Farm and centred at SP 68817 31579, underlies blocks of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks is a U-shaped ditch between 1.5 and 2 metres wide that encloses an internal area about 104 metres WNW-ESE and 135 metres SSW-NNE, with the NNE side open. It may be that this was a rectilinear ditched enclosure. Within the enclosure in the SE corner is a possible small rectangular ditched enclosure 23 x 21 metres (8-10).
