Description
DISCOVERY OF EARTHWORKS REPORTED IN 1924 WITH LINES FOLLOWING N AND W SLOPES OF HILL PLUS DYKE TO NE (BIBL1) NOT DISCOVERED DURING FIELDWORK OR FROM AIR PHOTOS OF AREA (BIBL2) FOUND BY MR BASIL DURHAM CIRCA 1924 (BIBL1)
[TQ 0198] "Mr. G. Basil Barham reports the discovery of earthworks at Chenies in a field on the right of the road from Rickmansworth, with lines following the northern and western slopes of the hill, while there seems in addition to have been a dyke covering the camp on the NE. This work may, he thinks, be subsidiary to the works at Chesham known as 'th Balks', generally regarded as lynchets but which ... he considers to be the remains of a camp with a single vallum ..." (B1).
The topo. description of these 'earthworks' suggest they lie in the Chess valley but they were not discovered during fieldwork. Nothing answering the description could be seen on Air photos of the area (B3).
