Description

REFERENCE TO PROBABLE HUNTING LODGE. OLD LOWER STOREY BEAMS IN INTERIOR VERY OLD, CORE OF BUILDING POSSIBLY 16TH CENTURY OR 15TH CENTURY (B1).

According to an Auction catalogue of 1954, (a) parts of Lodge Farm, Chenies, 'have great character, and many oak beams have been uncovered', and Mr. McLeod Matthews (b) is of the opinion (from the fact that there were parks attached to the Manor (see TQ 09 NW 17), his personal knowledge of the farm building, and its name and situation) that it was a hunting lodge. Lodge Farm is at TQ 008 969 (C) (B3).
Visited 23/5/60. The lower story of Lodge Farm is undoubtedly old, and the beams in the interior very old (B6).
As the parks were obsolete by about 1600 (see TQ 09 NW 17) a hunting lodge would have to be earlier than that date, and the core (at least)of Lodge Farm could well be 16th or even 15th c. Its origin as a Hunting Lodge seems very probable (B6).
The lower storey of Lodge Farm is of Tudor brick, and the W gable is timber framed with Tudor-brick infill, but the addition of another storey and new roof and windows in the 18th/19th c has destroyed the original character of the house. Not outstanding. The tradition that it was a hunting lodge survives (B4).
