Description

CONCENTRATION OF ROOF & FLOOR TILE FRAGMENTS, INCLUDING WASTERS & DEBRIS, SUGGESTS KILN SITE. LAYERS OF MIXED CLAY & JUMBLED DEPOSITS OF TILE FRAGMENTS, BUT NO CLEAR STRATIFICATION (B1-2).
FINDS MAY ONLY REPRESENT DUMP FROM A KILN (B3 & SEE CASS 2743:03 FOR GENERAL DISCUSSION).
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION (B4).
A presumed kiln site was found in 1939 when digging a cess pit in front gardens. 14 perfect tiles, all different and thought to be a trade sample, were found as well as fragments of plain black, brown, and yellow floor tiles and a preponderance of roof tiles. One of the decorated tiles was part of a 9-tile mosaic with a roundel in the middle and described as unique (B4).
Negative watching brief carried out in November 2021 by RSK ADAS during groundworks in advance of construction of a single storey side extension. Modern disturbance with made ground directly overlying natural suggested that there had been ground reduction during previous drainage works and the laying of a patio. See report for detail (B6).
