Description

Plan Form - Rectangular.
House of two storeys and attic built 2nd half of 16th century. Now covered in cement. Fully described (B2).
Grade II+. Late C16 now cement rendered and colourwashed. Old tile roof with 2 elaborate Dutch gables. 2 storeys, 2 canted bays. Gables are linked with finials on top and at each end; each contains one 2-light stone mullion lattice casement. Bays have on each floor 1 cement rendered mullion and transom 4-light lattice casement surmounted by entablature. Right hand bay's ground floor has been squared by slight side extensions C18, and contains 6 panel door, 2 panels now glass - in panelled reveal, and 1 double hung sash. Interior C16 and C17 panelling and carved C17 overmantel. (RCHM I p 5 MON 8)(B7).
Pottery from garden (001). Also found were oyster shells and building debris.




[SU 95739733] The Gables, High Street, house of two storeys and an attic, cement-covered and with tiled roofs. Built probably in the second half of the 16th century, with modern additions at the back. The front has curvilinear gables, mullioned windows and moulded cornices. A room on the ground floor has a late 16th C. fireplace of Totternhoe stone, and in the room above is another, of oak, c.1640. Three rooms have late 16th or early 17th C. oak panelling. Sited from plan [A0/59/400/8] (B2).

1500-1650 domestic pottery consisting of remains of Tyggs, cream pans, a large pot, and shallow pans or dishes, mostly with a brown glaze, oyster shells and building debris found at a shallow depth in the garden at the back of The Gables, 29 High Street, property of Miss J. Wadge. Water level was reached at about 3 ft. A list of the fragments has been deposited at the Aylesbury Museum (B3).

A pleasant little house with a reasonably untouched late 16th C. Façade. Its name, The Gables, is confirmed. Extent indicated on Sp. 25". Owner Miss Joan Wadge. GP A0/60/49/2 - S. facing front (B9).
