Description
EXTENSIVE FLINT SCATTER LOCATED. FIELD SUBDIVIDED INTO AREAS & COMPLETELY & SYSTEMATICALLY WALKED (SEE PLAN FILED). PARTICULARLY HIGH PROPORTION OF FLINTS SEEMED TO COME FROM THE RISING GROUND FORMING MUCH OF THE E PART OF THE FIELD, OR AT ITS FOOT. QUANTITY OF MATERIAL DECREASES FROM AREA 19-53. TOTAL ASSEMBLAGE MESOLITHIC /BRONZE AGE. A VERY RICH FIELD, POSSIBLY AS ADJACENT TO RIVER (B1).
Evaluation comprising 3 trial trenches and 10 test pits carried out by Oxford Archaeology in March 2004 failed to reveal any archaeological features. 8 worked and 3 burnt flints (all undiagnostic) recovered from ploughsoil in test pits. Report includes a reassessment of the results of the 1979 fieldwalking (B2).
Several hundred flint flakes, fifty-one blades, a possible microlith, transverse and barbed-and-tanged arrowheads, a number of cores and round scrapers have been found at SP70730750. The total assemblage spans the Mesolithic to Bronze Age (B3).
