Description

Plan Form - Rectangular.
Probable site of religious house (B1).
Site of ancient manor deriving name from Blackwell family held land here in C13 (B2,B7).
2 stories much altered C16, C15 domestic building plaster filling replaced by brick C17 moulded roof trusses upper floor inserted C16 (B3).
Grade II. C15 hall and crosswing house. Timber-framed with brick infill. Old tile roof. Former open hall of 2 bays with C16 inserted floor and stack backing onto cross-passage. Two storey crosswings with upper floors jettied to west. Close studding to west front wih concealed braces, panel framing to sides and rear. Cross passage at right end of hall with original moulded jambed doorway with 4-centred arched head and sunk spandrels. Lattice leaded casements. Later rear additions. Interior: Crosswing ceilings with large exposed joists and beams. Hall truss with moulded purlins and wall plates, chamfered wind braces. Arch braced tie beam with queen struts to collar, all moulded. Moulded capitals with wall shafts. Similar roofs in crosswings, but unmoulded. Several doorways have original moulded frames and 4-centred heads with sunk spandrels. C17 staircse in small, framed addition at junction of right hand crosswing and hall. RCHM I 101 MON.52 (B6).
