Summary

Twelfth to sixteenth century historical records and field-name evidence of site of windmill. A probable medieval and/or post-medieval windmill mound is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304).

LATE C12: ABBOT OF OSENEY HAS A WINDMILL (B1).
A WINDMILL IN STEEPLE CLAYDON MENTIONED IN 1556 (B2).
MOUND, APPROX DIAMETER 9M, WITH REMAINS OF 4 HOLLOWS EACH APPROX 1.5M DIAM, WITHIN CIRCULAR DITCH. CIRCUMFERENCE OF MOUND APPROX 33M. NAMES 'WINDMILL HILL FARM' & 'MILL FIELD' LOCATED (B3).

A probable medieval and/or post-medieval windmill mound is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on a field boundary about 190 metres SW of Claydon Hill Farm and centred at SP 71761 27754, a C-shaped earthwork bank up to 4 metres wide encloses an internal area about 10 metres in diameter, within which is a small irregularly shaped mound up to 6 metres at its widest. The earthworks are abutted on all sides by blocks of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks (4-5).
