The site of a brickworks of post medieval/modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located east of Hartwell House, Aylesbury, and centred at SP 80477 12504. The brickworks is visible on aerial photographs as At least 30 irregularly shaped pits ranging in size from 7-58m across, at their largest, and cut in to underlying solid geology of Kimmeridge Clay, overlain with Superficial Deposits of Head. Trackways, buildings, mounds and earthwork banks, as well as an area of parallel trenches/ditches are visible as upstanding earthworks and extant structures in the 1940s and by 1950 small mounds are visible on some of the area. By 1961 the buildings have gone and some of the pits have been infilled. A single large building, which still remains on modern aerial photographs, is towards the centre of the site. By 1971 infilling of the whole extent of the brickworks has started and the British Geological Survey Geology Viewer shows the whole area of the brickworks as Artificial/Made Ground. By 1993 the area is under grass and appears to remain the same through until the present day. Lidar visualisations show a raised, smooth area typical of infilled/made ground. The brickworks at Hartwell is listed in trade directories from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is included in a gazetteer of brickworks in Buckinghamshire (p41) which lists R.W. Locke at the premises. Part of the northwestern area of the brickworks has been crossed diverting the A418 for High Speed Rail 2 (HS2) works. It is not clear what remains may have been buried by the infilling of the site. (11-17)
