Description

Dimensions - Radius 18m.
IN A CLOSE CALLED 'WINDMILL FIELD' IS A CIRCULAR MOUND, 20 POLES IN CIRCUMFERENCE, 4 YDS HIGH, SURROUNDED BY A MOAT (B1). SMALL CIRCULAR HOMESTEAD MOAT(B2); RECENT INSPECTION SHOWS IT TO BE ALMOST CERTAINLY A PLOUGHED-DOWN MILL MOUND, NOW LEVELLED. FIELD NAME 'WINDMILL KNOB' (B4).

A probable post medieval windmill mound is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located about 150 metres SW of Upper South Farm and centred at SP 72884 19193, a slightly oval mound is about 30 metres in diameter at its widest. Surrounding the mound is a ditch that varies between 1.5 and 9 metres wide. Visible as a mound with a circular ditch filled with trees on aerial photographs from the 1940s to 1960s; by 1976 the site had been ploughed and the earthworks much denuded. Also by this time the construction of a late 20th century trackway from the farm to the fields along the field boundary line has truncated the SE facing side of the ring ditch. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, the plough reduced earthworks remain visible (5-10).

A small circular moat S of upper South Farm, and 1 1/2M SW of the Church (shown at SP 72891918 on OS 6" but not described) (B2).
On a farm, in a close called "Windmill Field" is a circular mound about 80 yds in circumference, and four yards in height, which is surrounded by a moat (B1).
No trace and no local knowledge of this site which has been completely ploughed out. Not shown on Tithe Map (B11).
The slight earthwork remains of the circular mound and surrounding ditch described by authorities 1 and 2 above could be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. It is possible this mound originated as a Bronze Age round barrow, perhaps re-used as a windmill mound. The cropmark remains of a second possible round barrow (Monument Number: 1571232) could be seen approximately 30m to the north-west in the adjacent field to the north-west (B12).
NRHE insert 2013 (B12).
