Description

1580 MAP: 'MOAT FARM' APPROX AT NGR (B1).
HOMESTEAD MOAT NEAR A STREAM (B2).
'MOAT'(B3).
SURVIVES AS SHOWN ON OS MAPS, BUT OUTER DITCHED FEATURES ON N & W SIDES HAVE BEEN INFILLED & LEVELLED. ISLAND IS FLAT & LEVEL (B4).
OWNER IS CLEARING MOAT TO ENABLE WATER TO STAND ALL ROUND (B5).



The remains of a moat near Collett Farm in a field known as Kitchen Close (B6). (Shown but not described on OS 6" 1958 at SP 70451834) (B2).
A sub rectangular homestead moat occupying approx 1/2 acre and situated some 75.0m ASL adjacent to a stream. It has a max overall east-west width of 30.0m with a north-south length of 56.0m. The arms vary in width from 6.0m-11.0m- the north and east being water-filled. Published (OS 25") adjacent ponds have now been infilled. There is no trace of a building on the island which stands 0.2m above the surrounding levels. The moat is spring fed with no obvious drainage channel. Published survey (1:2500) revised on AM (B7).
