Description

FRAGMENT REMAINS OF MOAT(B1).
PROBABLE HOMESTEAD MOAT. 3 ARMS WATERFILLED, 18M WIDE. A CENTRAL MOUND RISES 2.8M ABOVE WATER LEVEL. GROUND IS DISTURBED BUT NO TRACE OF BUILDING FOUND. TO N THE GROUND LEVEL RISES & IT IS UNLIKELY THAT WATER COULD HAVE EXTENDED RIGHT ROUND THE MOUND (B2).

A possible medieval / post medieval moat is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field immediately S of Dinton Hall and centred at SP 76618 10881, a broad U-shaped ditch up to 24 metres wide may be the remains of a moated site. The SW facing side is 55 metres long aligned NW-SE: the SE facing side is 81 metres long aligned SW-NE: and the NE facing side is 64 metres long, aligned SE-NW (3-5).

A fragment of a Moat remains in the park of Dinton House. (The feature shown on OS 6" 1960, at SP 76631086) (B1).
A probably homestead moat, 3 arms of which are waterfilled and up to c 210m deep and 18.0m wide. A central mound rises 2.8m above the water level and the ground is disturbed but no trace of a building was found. To the N the ground level rises and it is unlikely that the water could have extended right round the mound. There is a fine stone-built dovecote at SP 76551098. Dinton House is 19th century (restored) and not outstanding. Published 1:2500 survey correct (B6).
