Description

Fragment of a homestead moat at New Park Farm. (Detail shown at SP 603159 on OS 6" but not described) (B1).
OS 1:10560 MAP SHOWS A CURVED PIECE OF WATER AT NGR (B2).

A small square moat way shown as complete with water in all sides in 1884 and with an entrance in the middle of the NE side (b5). (B3)

The remains of this homestead moat, are situated on level ground and comprise the water-filled arm of the SW side. It is 70.0m long, 11.0m wide and 1.0m deep with a short southerly extension at the SE angle. Only the barest traces of the other arms can now be seen, all being infilled, save for a modern drainage ditch. The interier is very slightly raised above the external ground level. The source of water supply for the moat was probably, as now, surface drainage.
Published 1:2500 survey revised on PFD (B4).
