A subrectangular medieval moat is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a large field opposite St Mary and St Nicholas’s church in Chetwode and centred at SP 63963 29758, a U-shaped ditch between 11.5 and 18 metres wide has its NE side open either abutting or truncated by the lane called School End. The NW facing side is 87 metres long SW-NE, the SW facing side is 54.5 metres long NW-SE and the curving SE facing side is 83 metres long. The moat encloses a subrectangular platform about 61 metres SW-NE and 35 metres NW-SE at its widest points. There is a small irregularly shaped retaining earthwork bank on the SW facing side. This moat is part of much more extensive village shrinkage earthworks (4-7).
